There is an outage with AT&T phone service in the north metro area of the Twin Cities in Minnesota. After two days, AT&T is still not acknowledging this problem. Service continually phases in and out with no 3G coverage and nominal reception. I have made repeated inquiries to my corporate account rep and to the store itself. The account rep is insistent that it is my phone because their system does not show a network outage. He instructed me to have my SIM card replaced. The store states that nine customers have now reported the issue to them, but it is still not logged as an outage in their system. They also stated that they replaced the SIM cards in five phones yesterday, but the problem was not resolved. They rushed me out the door before any other customers could hear that their "more bars in more places" is not entirely accurate.

They said it couldn't be done. But I never believe Best Buy employees when they try to answer technical questions. I knew there had to be a way to connect my DirecTV HD DVR HR23-700 to my existing 802.11n network without spending a lot of money. DirecTV has a guide on how to use a powered access point to connect to the ethernet port of the HR23-700, but none of the big box electronics stores seem to carry access points anymore. They mostly only carry routers. Fortunately, there is a way to use these routers to solve the problem, but it does take some fancy work.
This guide will walk you step by step through the complete configuration from start to finish.

Some time ago, I wrote an article giving an overview of how to configure VLANs on a Cisco Catalyst 3550. I did not go into detail on firewall configuration because this was not necessary for me at the time using a PIX 515e. However, things have changed on my network as they often do and we are now utilizing an Untangle firewall which does not currently support the use of VLANs. I have however found a workaround that functions perfectly in my environment without compromising security or efficiency.
One solution would be to revert back to a single subnet; however, we would lose the benefits of network segmentation that reduces collisions and optimizes our network performance. For the sake of this discussion, I am going to build upon the discussion in the previous article located here and only focus on the configuration of Untangle to meet the needs of the network designed in that article. It would be wise to review that article before continuing with this discussion.
